"Something in the Way She Moves" Metaphors of Musical Motion

چکیده

Our most fundamental concepts of musical motion and space, used by laypeople an d music theorists alike, are defined by conceptual metaphors that are based on our experience of physical motion. We analyze the 3 most important metaphors of musical motion : the "MOVING MUSIC." metaphor, the "MUSICAL LANDSCAPE" metaphor, and the "MOVING FORCE" metaphor. We show how each metaphor is grounded in a particular basic experience of physical motion and physical forces and how the logic of physical motion shapes the logic of musical motion. We suggest that our conceptualization of, discourse about, and even our experience of musical motion depend on the logic of these 3 metaphors.

The Shape of Music - The Music of Shape

Musicians make use of the notion of shape in relation to music performance, teaching, composition, improvisation; they often think and talk about the shape of a musical phrase or melody, the shape of a single sound event, the shape of a longer section or piece, the expressive shaping of music during performance. But how can a primarily spatial term such as shape (meaning “the external form, con...

Metaphors are Embodied, and so are Their Literal Counterparts

This study investigates whether understanding up/down metaphors as well as semantically homologous literal sentences activates embodied representations online. Participants read orientational literal sentences (e.g., she climbed up the hill), metaphors (e.g., she climbed up in the company), and abstract sentences with similar meaning to the metaphors (e.g., she succeeded in the company). In Exp...

Something in the way she moves.

A recent study using a crossmodal matching task showed that the identity of a talker could be recognized even when the auditory and visual stimuli that were being matched were different sentences spoken by the talker. This finding implies that general temporal features of a person's speech are shared across the auditory and visual modalities.

A Numerical Study of Drop Motion in Poiseuille Flow

The cross-stream migration of a deformable drop in two-dimensional Poiseuille flow at finite Reynolds numbers is studied numerically. In the limit of a small Reynolds number (<1), the motion of the drop depends strongly on the ratio of the viscosity of the drop fluid to the viscosity of the suspending fluid. For a viscosity ratio 0.125, the drop moves toward the centre of the channe while for t...
